Today in lecture we talked about industry standards for 32page picture book, as well as, the behind the scenes of working with your publisher. There was great emphasis put on collaborating with your editor, publisher, designer and such. It was a wonderful lecture by Ness Wood a former art director at Random House, currently working as a freelance designer for children's books. Getting to see the other side of the industry, I think is a big benefit; and Ness would be fabulous to work with. Everyone wants an art director/designer like Ness!
As far as the story goes, today it changed A LOT! During a discussion with one of the instructors, we decided the escape scene needed to be bigger. So the teaparty was moved indoors and now Clarence must escape through the open window. I also decided to removed the little girl from my story for fear that children might sympathize with her losing her pet and not Clarence who is unhappy being held in captivity. In the end, both of these changes are for the best. I worked lots more on sketching scenes today as well. (Sorry for the photo quality, I draw lightly and my phone doesn't take great pictures at dusk)
